Gangotri
Gangotri, (Ganga' + ’Uttari’ which means descended) the
picturesque pilgrimage in the hinterlands of the Himalayas is the most
sacred spot where Ganga , the stream of life, touched earth for the
first time.
Situated at 99 km from Uttrarkashi, at height of 3140 meters.A shrine
dedicated to the Goddess was built some 250 years ago by Amar Bahadur
Thapa, the Gorkha Commander

According to mythology, Goddess Ganga - the daughter of heaven, manifested
herself in the form of a river to absolve the sins of King Bhagirath’s
predecessors, following his severe penance of several centuries. Lord Shiva
received into his matted locks to minimize the immense impact of her fall.
She came to be called Bhagirathi at her legendary source.
The physical source of the holy river is at Gaumukh, 18 kms. further uphill,
along the Gangotri Glacier. Several pilgrims trek upto the source to offer
prayers either on foot or on ponies. The verdant valleys, dense forests and
towering peaks offer excellent trekking and mountaineering opportunities for
adventure enthusiasts.

Bhagirath Shila:
Near the temple is a great stone slab-the ‘Bhagirath Shila’ dedicated to
Bhagirath, whose penance is believed to have brought the Ganga down from the
heavens.
Gomukh
Gomukh(4200 meters), the identified source of the holy river Ganga, is 18
kms. Further uphill from Gangotri. The trek to Gomukh is gradual and several
pilgrims undertake the journey to pay homage the river at its known source.
Bhaironghati.
Furhter downstream,10 km from Gangotri, is the picturesque forested halting
place of Bhaironghati. There exists a small temple of Bhairon, appointed by
Shiva to safeguard this region which gives the place its name. The bridge
over the Jhanvi river at Bhaironghati is said to be the highest in Asia.

Places of interest in and around Uttarkashi:
Vishwanath Temple - Vishwanath temple in Uttarkashi is one of the
prime pilgrimage attractions in Uttarkashi around 300 mts from the local bus
stand. An ancient temple, it is said that it was first built by Parasuram.
Later, it was renovated by Maharani Khaneti, wife of Sudarshan Shah in 1857.
The temple has a Shivling, 60 cms high and 90 cms in circumference. No one
misses this holy shrine on their trip to Uttarkashi.
Shakti Temple - This temple is just opposite Vishwanath temple. A big
Trishul in this temple is the centre of attraction. The trishul is 6 metres
in height and 90 cms at the bottom. Different people hold different views
about the trishul, it is widely believed that the trishul is made of iron in
the upper part and copper in the lower part. The epics say that this trishul
was thrown at devils by goddess Durga.
Gangnani
Gangnani, about 37 kms. from Maneri, is the hot water spring at Gangnani
where one can have a refreshing bath.
Sat-Tal
Sat-Tal meaning seven lakes is situated just above Dharali, 2 kms beyond
Harsil. The trek of about 7 kms is rewarding as this group of lakes is
situated amidst beautiful natural surroundings. It also provides lovely
camping sites.
Dayara Bugyal
Bugyal in the local language means “high altitude meadow”. Situated
at an elevation of about 10,000 feet above seal-level this vast
meadow is second to none in natural beauty. During winter, it
provides excellent ski slopes over an area of 28 sq. kms. The
panoramic view of the Himalayas from here is breathetaking. There is
a small lake also in the area, and to camp by its side would be
memorable event. |

Harsil
The Bhagirathi valley is most enchanting and preserves many colorful spots
in its lap. Situated at a distance of 72 kms from Uttarkashi on the main
highway to Gangotri, at an elevation of 2623 metres, this sylvan hamlet is
famous for its natural beauty and delicious apples.
Gaumukh
The Gaumukh glacier is the source of Bhagirathi (Ganga) and is held in high
esteem by the devouts who do not miss the opportunity to have a holy dip in
the bone chilling icy water. It is 18 kms. from Gangotri.
Nandan-Van Tapovan
These two spots are situated opposite the Gangotri glacier further up from
Gaumukh, at a distance of 6 kms. from where visitors can have a superb view
of the majestic shivling peak.
Yamunotri
The shrine of Yamunotri, source of river Yamuna is situated in the direction
opposite to Gangotri and the road bifurcates and goes to Yamunotri from
Dharasu, a place between Rishikesh-Uttarkashi. Situated at an elevation of
3235 metres above sea level, the shrine of Yamunotri is one of the ‘four
dhams’ of Uttarakhand.
Har-ki-dun
Har-ki-dun is famous for its natural beauty and is a popular destination for
trekkers.at the height of 3566m, Har-Ki-Doon is a land of unparalleled
beauty in the whole district of Uttar Kashi.
